Minecraft: Pi Edition Is Now Available As A Free Download For Raspberry Pi [Updates]

Minecraft: Pi Edition is a special version of the popular sandbox indie game that is now available as a free download for Raspberry Pi. Mojang, the developers of the game have released the first version of the game and have given it a dedicated blog with the download instructions. Also, Raspberry Pi’s quick start guide, and wiki should help you get you started on the right foot.
The game is specially designed to run on the credit card sized microcomputer. For those who have come in late, Raspberry Pi is a cheap tiny computer that was constructed for educational use and has since garnered a following. It appeals to computer science students, hackers, and the do-it-yourself (DIY) enthusiasts.

The game has been ported from a version of Minecraft: Pocket Edition. The first version of the game has ironed out few of the bugs. Minecraft – Pi Edition runs on Raspbian “wheezy” with XWindows. According to reports, the gameplay on Raspberry Pi is similar as on other devices with a few exceptions. The survival mode is not supported but it allows the gamer to go down to the code level and program the game to their liking. This is apparently in keeping with the spirit of the tweakable little microcomputer.
Owen Hill, Chief Word Officer at Mojang AB said:
“It’s like hacking your way into Minecraft and modifying the game world with code, a bit like being Notch, Jeb, or Nathan, but arguably more fun and less stressful.”
