Party of sin pc game review:
Party of Sin is a cooperative platformer that allows you to inhabit one of the Seven Deadly Sins. Battle the College of Angels with your friends but also compete to satisfy your Sin. Each character has a unique set of abilities that can
What’s your vice? Are you a compulsive liar? Too jealous sometimes? Ever wonder what would happen if you could play as those sins? Tired of all the questions? Let’s just get to it then. A Party of Sin from Crankshaft Games is out now on Steam. But is this party worth going to, or is it a letdown?
A Party of Sin opens with the seven deadly sins escaping from hell. Frankly, this is one of the coolest gaming concepts in a while. As you make your way through hell, purgatory, and some other regions we won’t spoil, you’ll see it’s not just good on paper. As you take Wrath, Greed, Gluttony, Envy, Pride, Lust, and Sloth through these platforming levels, you’ll get a kick out of the pure imagination of A Party of Sin.
Every Sin in A Party of Sin has his own abilities, of course. Wrath can charge, which lets him hit special switches or smash through certain walls; it’s also a handy combat maneuver. Greed’s chain allows him to drag items and enemies toward him, and it can be used to latch on to certain grapple points. Gluttony can swallow cubes for puzzle-solving purposes, and he can even swallow enemies to regain health. Envy can fire a green laser that lights torches and burns enemies. Pride can slash his sword to deflect projectiles or charge forward for a long jump. Lust can charm enemies into a friendly state, and she can also create platforms on special heart icons. Finally, Sloth can slow down objects and enemies. As stated, imagination is rampant in A Party of Sin. While some Sins are certainly more fun to use than others, Crankshaft Games put time into making each one unique.
These abilities give A Party of Sin a real Metroid-vania feel. You’ll encounter platforming segments and puzzles that require the use of many Sins. While both of these are fun, they also have moments that bring the experience crashing down. Jumping and movement feel very sticky, and when so much of the game depends on well-timed jumps and abilities, this is a problem. Regarding puzzles, many use the Sin’s abilities in cool ways. Unfortunately, some puzzles feel like they were meant for the game’s co-op mode only; these few will leave you frustrated as you try to juggle all aspects of the puzzle by yourself. At least the level design is cool – you’ll just be frustrated in some solid-looking levels.
It’s not just level design that polarizes A Party of Sin. Combat is, without question, the weakest part of the game, boiling down to clicking on enemies until they die. Abilities help combat a bit, but it feels sloppy overall. This goes double for some boss battles, where the game can actually crash if you don’t defeat the boss the way the developers intended. On top of this, Gluttony’s ability to swallow enemies completely breaks combat: you can simply swallow any enemy (regardless of their defenses), wait until you’re healed, and swallow another. It’s obvious Crankshaft Games tried to make combat match the unique ways the Sins get around, but it just doesn’t work.
Levels in A Party of Sin also contain a few pick-ups. Enemies drop red apples, which heal you and add to your level completion score. Enemies also occasionally drop souls, which also add to said score. Green apples function like big coins in New Super Mario Bros., with a few to collect in each level. These can then be spent in the store to accentuate the Sins’ abilities. The best part is that green apples are transferable; you can move them around in the shop to try out the various upgrades. You can also stumble across silver apples in the levels; these grant you invulnerability for a brief period of time.
We’ve mentioned level score twice now – time to expound on that. Every time you complete a level in A Party of Sin, the completion screen gives you incentive to play more. You’ll see how many green apples you missed and a diagram of how much you used each Sin, but that’s just courtesy stuff. You’ll also get a completion time and a score. Both of these give you a reason to replay the level for a better time and score, as a each level has a leader board…and there’s always some douche with a better time than you.
We also need to touch on co-op briefly. We say “briefly” because this is probably Crankshaft’s biggest misstep with A Party of Sin. Are you ready for this? Co-op is only available…locally. Yes, a in PC-only game – a.k.a. a game on a system that must be hooked up to the internet to even be downloaded – you cannot link up online for co-op. Now, don’t get us wrong – including co-op is nice, but limiting it to buddies in the same room is a mistake. The saddest part is that co-op is done very well, with puzzles taking on all new solutions when a second Sin is active, but most won’t ever experience this.
A Party of Sin has its issues, but it also has its counters. Platforming – the key part of the game – is difficult at times, but you’ll put up with it to move through the stylish levels and see what the game has to show you. Combat is weak, but it’s clear that Crankshaft Games had good ideas there. Co-op is fun when you can experience it, but limiting it to offline play is a bad move. On the bright side, the game has a fantastic vision, and the ideas the developers had regarding upgrades and replaying levels are nice. All in all, A Party of Sin is solid, but with some caveats.
