Real Racing 2 ($4.99)

Racing games on the iPad usually involve some sort of trade off between payability and graphics, but Real Racing 2 excels at both. There are several ways to play: you can take to the track in a quick race or a time trial, or begin a racing career, where winning valuable points lets you upgrade your car and race against the big boys.

Unlike many car games where learning the controls is an art form in itself, in Real Racing you steer with the iPad, and brake by touching the screen. It's breathtakingly simple, leaving you free to concentrate on screeching round the tracks in BMWs, Jaguars, McLarens and Chevrolets (you can choose from 30 cars).

Where this game reigns supreme is in multiplayer mode. You can race against other players over the internet, but things get even better if you're racing against an iPod or iPad-owning friend in the same room over a Wi-Fi network and you have an Apple TV. You can then use Apple's AirPlay to connect to your TV and race against each other in a split-screen view. Electrifying and addictive, it offers the best racing experience on the iPad.
