Memory Tricks to Upgrade the Sony VAIO Memory
Do you like this story?
Random
access memory (RAM) comes in several types. Depending on the model, a
Sony VAIO might use SDRAM, DDR SDRAM, DDR2 SDRAM or DDR3 SDRAM. Newer
models use DDR3 SDRAM, whereas legacy systems use SDRAM. DDR SDRAM has
twice the throughput of SDRAM. Each revision to DDR SDRAM increases the
performance of the memory.RAM chips are packaged inside memory modules. Sony VAIOs use small
outline dual in-line memory modules (SODIMMs) to package memory chips.
SODIMMs come in 72-pin, 100-pin, 144-pin or 200-pin versions. The
different variations are not compatible with one another; you must
install the correct variation into the laptop per its specifications.
The higher the pin number, the greater the memory capacity. Upgrading
the SODIMM memory modules in your Sony VAIO can improve the performance
of the computer significantly.

ReadyBoost
-
Windows ReadyBoost designates and converts storage space on a flash drive or SD card to supplemental memory, increasing the performance of the computer. Windows Vista can devote only one device to ReadyBoost, but Windows 7 can utilize multiple flash memory devices to use as cache memory. After inserting the flash drive or SD card into the appropriate slot on the desktop or laptop computer, select "Speed up my system" from AutoPlay and configure the settings on the ReadyBoost tab.
Quick Check Compatibility
-
Crucial maintains an extensive database of information on a wide variety of desktop and notebook computers. Enter your product information on the main page, and the website will display a table listing the memory specifications for your Sony VAIO. You can use the table to determine how much memory to install to your computer and which type of memory to use.
Below the manufacturer specifications, Crucial lists some memory modules compatible with your Sony VAIO. You don't have to purchase the memory module from the website; you can use the information to purchase memory from a different supplier. -
How to Upgrade
-
Don't attempt to upgrade the memory without first turning off the computer and removing the AC adapter from the AC jack. Static electricity, while harmless to humans, can damage computer hardware permanently. To protect your memory from damage, put on an antistatic wrist strap or touch a bare, metal surface.
Unlock the battery from its bay and remove it from the Sony VAIO. Loosen the screws securing the memory cover to the base of the computer. Release the retainers securing the memory in place and lift the module out at a 30-degree angle. To install new memory, follow the removal directions in reverse.
