It's a sign of a platform that will be around for sometime when there are an ever-continuing number of games that manage to capture the imagination of the public. My Army is one of these games, much like Angry Birds and more recently Temple Run, it thrives on ease of use, simplicity of design and an infuriating need to complete more and more of it. Your objective is simple, take your army as far as you can, avoiding other soldiers, mortar shells, homing missiles and targeted blimp bombings. Sounds ridiculous, well it is. And brilliant at the same time.
Your control method is simplicity itself -just tilt your phone left and right to weave in and out of the many obstacles that stand in your way. You start each campaign with four soldiers but can pick up POWs on the way that will join your fight. As you progress you can jump into vehicles and collect new uniforms that will go some way to protect you against the constant onslaught of enemy gunfire.
The great thing about this game is its pacing. It gives you just as much as you can handle in terms of difficulty building up slowly. You start simply enough, just having to negotiate your way around the mines and barbed wire that litter your way. You then have to keep your ammo topped up so you can get past enemy soldiers. Then come the shells. To rid yourself of these you need to tap on them before they strike, no mean feat when you are trying to tilt your phone here there and everywhere. The next foe comes in the form of heat-seeking missiles, which will follow you and need to be dismissed as soon as possible, again by tapping on them.
If you are still alive after this you will see a target appear on your screen. This is a bomb attack waiting to happen; if you don't swipe the crosshairs away you will be swiftly cut down by a wave of bombers.
The result of this epic conflict is a gripping game that will have you returning again and again to try and gain a few extra yards, to get the best score and to try and complete the level. It's absorbing, entertaining and terrifyingly addictive. My Army is a simple game made incredibly well.
Verdict:
A highly addictive game
